BBQ, watermelon, fireworks, and family outings are synonymous this time of year. We celebrate America’s freedom this month and most of us will give little thought to what that means.
When the founding fathers of this country set aside and determined to separate themselves from the rule of Great Britain, they knew what it meant. They would be viewed as traitors, and their punishment was death. Fortunately for us, they did not fear death, nor did they fear the rule of human government. Their hope was in God and His call for all men to be free. This same hope lives on today. Not only are we free to live in this great country where our hopes and dreams can become realities but we have the freedom to live in Christ.
If you are a Christian living in this country today, it would appear that you are not free to believe in Jesus Christ. Our world is trying so desperately to disprove the humanity and deity of Jesus Christ that it will stop at nothing to smother our beliefs, in Him.
With the recent approval of the right for homosexuals to marry in the state of California, our beliefs have been ridiculed and thrown back in our face. There are still active judicial cases in Oregon and California trying so desperately to remove the phrase “under God” from our pledge of allegiance. Pastors in the US and Canada are being brought up on charges of hate crimes for preaching against homosexuality. Parents are having their right to parent questioned and challenged by the court system, because it is inhibiting the child’s right to choose for themselves.
Is this what our founding fathers had in mind when they established the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States? You decide; Please read the following:Our first amendment of the Constitution says “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances”.
Our declaration of Independence says “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
In the name of tolerance, our society has thrown absolutes and standards away and determined that we are the masters of our lives and destinies. The problem with this way of thinking is , it strips away the fact that we were created by God and our purpose is to glorify Him.
While our country may be on a fast track to destruction, our hope and freedom is in Jesus Christ. Put your trust in Him, and acknowledge Him as Lord of your life. Remember that our freedom is in Him and not the rule of the government.
