I do not condone smoking. I have watched my family struggle with this addiction for years and I have no intention of promoting the use of any type of tobacco but something about this part of the message resonated with me. Maybe because I live in an area where tobacco use is so prevalent and it’s almost expected of you to smoke, chew, or dip.  I do find it odd that people “freak out” if someone is smoking before church or as soon as the exit the building they “light their burnt offerings”. Maybe because it’s out in the open and we’re very pharisaical when it comes to vices. We can condemn those who smoke and drink but we don’t deal with those addicted to porn or other areas within our lives that are so easily hidden.

The truth is, is that our heart is devoted to something other than God and we make excuses and justify why we do things. I am not giving license to do these things, but I believe our first response should be about people’s situation before God, not the fact they were smoking before church.

As far as “hurting ” their witness for Christ, I like to quote Steve Brown ” You’re not that hot, so don’t worry about it. God can take care of Himself and reach people in spite of you.”

Ok. Open the flood gates and disagree with me. I do think we should be a living witness but I believe we all have areas that could hurt our witness and while trying to cover all of the areas that could “hurt” our witness, we end up faking it and nobody likes a phony.
